History

University of Ilorin being a conventional University has a Faculty of Agriculture. The fact that the National Universities Commission’s Benchmarks and Minimum Academic Standards for Agricultural Sciences specifies that certain courses in Home Economics and Food Science be offered to meet the requirements for the award of a B. Agric. Degree, University of Ilorin, in its Academic Brief for 2000/2001-2009/2010 as approved by the University Senate and endorsed by the National Universities Commission by the University Council recommended the establishment of a Department of Home Economics and Food Science to offer a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Home Economics and Food Science in Faculty of Agriculture. A Department was recommended to offer B.Sc. Home Economics and B.Sc. Food Science because similar courses will be offered at 100 and 200 Levels by candidates for B. Agric., B.Sc. Home Economics and B.Sc. Food Science, MSc. Food Science, MSc. Home Economics, PGD Food Science, PhD Food Science, and more importantly, to save cost and for optimum utilization of facilities and manpower. The program was also established based on the need of the immediate environment of the University of Ilorin with very few Universities in the catchment area offering a degree in Home Economics. Furthermore, in the light of the current world, educating the individual for family living and the community in general to build a strong and self-reliant society is currently very high in the public’s perception. This program is designed to strengthen and enrich family life, influence public policy, and educate families to put research-based knowledge to work in Home Management, Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Child Development, Interior Decoration, Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, Food Engineering, Quality Control, Hospitality and Consumer Education.
